Development Matters

Development Matters is a non-statutory guidance document that supports the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It helps practitioners understand how children learn and develop from birth to five, and guides us in planning experiences that support each child’s progress.

Rather than using fixed targets, Development Matters recognises that every child is unique and develops at their own pace. It provides broad age ranges and examples of what children may be doing as they grow, helping us to identify next steps in their learning in a flexible and supportive way.

We use Development Matters to observe your child, understand their interests, and plan activities that build on what they already know and can do. This ensures learning is meaningful, enjoyable, and tailored to each child.

For parents, this means your child’s development is carefully supported through play-based learning, with regular opportunities for you to be involved, share achievements, and contribute to your child’s learning journey.
